What is Satahanka Camp?
In Finland, there are special Sea Scout and Guide groups that focus more on water activities in their weekly meetings. These troops often have their own ship, sailboat or larger motorboat, and as part of their scouting programme their aim is to teach how to grow up as a sailor in either a sea or lake water area, depending on where the troop is based. Sea Scouting is an official part of the Finnish Scouting programme.
Satahanka is a special camp for all guides and scouts that are interested in sea guide and scout program. The activities take place on the land, on the shore and some on the water. Although the camp program includes maritime activities, the camp itself is a “normal” Finnish scout camp: the participants live their camp life on land, based in The Camp Troops. Everyone sleeps in tents. There are few (if any) “real” buildings on the camp site. Everything is self-built with tents and other temporary structures. The camp program itself is a very active and practical, which is very typical for us Finns. So yes, bugs, weather and nature but in very good company and with great things to do!
While younger participants join in the daily program, campers over 18 years old help to run the camp in various camp assignments. Usually, in a Finnish camp, camp assignments last for the entire duration of the camp. For international IST members, we are offering opportunities to experience different assignments to make the camp a more varied experience.
What, Where and When?
The camp will take place in the beautiful Archipelago Sea, in the town of Nauvo, in the municipality of Parainen. The dates are 18-26 July 2025 and the programme is available for guides and scouts aged 13-18. Participants over 18 years of age are welcome to join the IST team.
Remember that participants over 18 years of age are IST members and are considered leaders in Finland. This means that anyone over 18 can (and must) apply for a camp assignment. IST members are selected by the camp organisation for various tasks that they will carry out throughout the camp.
Satahanka is not responsible for the entry of international participants into Finland, and the camp fee does not include any additional entry fees. Please check all necessary visa and other regulations and fees applicable in your country.
How to join Satahanka?
Participant registration will take place in spring 2025. If you want to follow the project and receive more information about the Satahanka camp, join the mailing list. A QA session will be organised in autumn 2024 to provide you with more detailed information to help you make a decision on your participation in the camp.
Participants under 18 years old cannot join the camp without their own leader. Please follow your country’s Safety Regulations regarding this matter. Participants over 18-years-old can join the Camp as an individual participant.
Our Troop does have a vessel… Can we come by boat?
Yes you can! If your group has a boat or ship and you want to sail to the camp, that would be a good idea. Finnish troops will sail their guide and patrol boats to Satakhanka, if possible, to be involved in the daily activities. The camp programme includes boating activities such as short sails and other activities. We welcome all international scout and guide vessels to join the Satahanka fleet!
Join Satahanka, join the Group of Heroes!
Have you heard about the Kalevala? The Finnish compilation of epic poetry collected by a Poet and a Writer Elias Lönnrot? This guy, Lönnrot, put together this collection’s first edition in 1835. And in Kalevala, you can find the word satahanka.
Satahanka means a big boat from the North. It is mentioned to carry hundreds of rowers and thousands of heroes! So not any dinghy whatsoever:
Jo tulevi Pohjan Pursi,
Satahanka hakkoavi!
Sata on miestä soutimille,
Tuhat ilman istumassa!From the North
Kalevala
A boat pursues,
Drive by hundred rowers,
Carrying a thousand heroes!
Oh, want to hear another fun fact? Finnish language gave a strong influence for the Elvish Language J.R.R. Tolkien created for the book The Lord of the Ring.
